How AKC championship points are counted
Points always come from the AKC point schedule for your dog's breed and sex in the state where the show was held. The schedule lists how many dogs must compete to earn 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 points. The AKC updates it every year, so use the schedule that was in effect on the show date.
- Winners Dog or Winners Bitch: count every dog of the same sex that competed in the regular classes.
- Best of Winners: gets the higher of the Winners Dog points and the Winners Bitch points. The two are never added together.
- Best of Opposite Sex from the classes: count the regular class dogs of your sex plus the Best of Breed entries of your sex.
- Best of Breed from the classes: count the regular class dogs of your sex plus every Best of Breed entry of both sexes, not counting Veterans. Your dog gets that or the Best of Winners points, whichever is higher.
- Group placement: a class dog that places in the Group gets the highest points awarded to any breed it defeated there.
Example
Say your breed's schedule for dogs is 2, 4, 6, 8 and 11 dogs for 1 to 5 points. Seven males competed in the regular classes and your dog won Winners Dog. Seven is at least 6 but less than 8, so your dog earned 3 points: a major. If your dog then went Best of Breed over 4 champions, the count becomes 7 plus 4, or 11 dogs, which is 5 points.
This is a helper, not an official record. The official rules are in the AKC Rules Applying to Dog Shows, and your dog's points are confirmed by the AKC.
Common questions
How many points does a dog need to become an AKC Champion?
A dog needs 15 championship points, including 2 major wins under 2 different judges. A major is a single win worth 3, 4 or 5 points.
Which dogs do I count for Winners Dog or Winners Bitch?
Count every dog of the same sex that competed in the regular classes, including your own dog. Absent, excused and disqualified dogs do not count. Then compare that number to the point schedule for your breed and sex.
What happens when Winners also goes Best of Breed?
Count the regular class entries of your dog's sex plus every dog of both sexes in the Best of Breed class. Do not count dogs that moved up from non-regular classes such as Veterans. Your dog gets that number of points or the Best of Winners points, whichever is higher.
Can a Group placement add points?
Yes. If a class dog wins Best of Breed and then places in the Group, it gets the highest championship points awarded to any breed it defeated in that Group, up to the 5 point maximum.
What is the most points a dog can win at one show?
Five points. No single show can award more than 5 championship points, no matter how many dogs competed.
