AKC Grand Championship Points Calculator
For champions competing in the Best of Breed class. Count the grand championship points your dog won for Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, Select Dog or Select Bitch.

How grand championship points are counted
Grand championship points can only be won in the Best of Breed class. The judge may award them to the Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, Select Dog and Select Bitch. There are no extra grand championship points for Group placements.
- Best of Breed: all regular class dogs of both sexes plus everything in the Best of Breed class, including your own dog.
- Best of Opposite Sex: the regular class dogs of your sex plus the Best of Breed entries of your sex.
- Select Dog or Select Bitch: the same count as Best of Opposite Sex, minus one for the dog of your sex that placed above you.
What it takes to finish
A Grand Champion needs 25 grand championship points, 3 majors (wins of 3 to 5 points) under 3 different judges, and must defeat at least one champion of record at 3 separate shows. After the title, points keep adding up toward Bronze (100), Silver (200), Gold (400) and Platinum (800).
Example
Seven class dogs and 5 class bitches competed, with 3 champion dogs and 3 champion bitches in Best of Breed. Your dog won Best of Breed, so you count 7 + 5 + 3 + 3 = 18 dogs. With a schedule of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 11 dogs, that is 5 grand championship points and a major. The Select Dog counts 7 + 3 = 10, minus 1 = 9 dogs, for 4 points.
Common questions
What does a dog need to become an AKC Grand Champion?
25 grand championship points, 3 majors under 3 different judges, and at 3 separate shows the dog must have defeated at least one other champion of record.
Who can earn grand championship points?
Only dogs that compete in the Best of Breed class: the Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, Select Dog and Select Bitch winners. A dog that went through the Winners class cannot earn grand championship points that day.
How are Select Dog and Select Bitch points counted?
Count the regular class entries of the same sex plus the Best of Breed entries of the same sex, including your own dog, then subtract one for the dog of that sex that placed above yours.
Do Veterans count toward grand championship points?
A dog that moves up from a non-regular class such as Veterans is counted as a dog defeated, but it does not count as a champion defeated.
What are Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Grand Champions?
They are levels for grand championship points earned over time: Bronze at 100, Silver at 200, Gold at 400 and Platinum at 800 points. Every additional 800 points adds a number, so 1,600 points is Platinum 2.
